Oxford Road Improvement

Below are a series of options for improving Oxford Road.

Speed cushions

Positives:

  • Allow ambulances and fire engines through at speed.
  • Allow cyclists through at speed.

Negatives:

  • Anecdotal evidence of them causing blowouts when driven over frequently.
  • From a ride perspective driving over at 30 (and likely 40 or even 50) is possible.
  • Drivers may go down the middle of the road to avoid them.

Speed bumps

Positives:

  • Will successfully slow the traffic down.

Negatives:

  • May cause issues for cyclists
  • Will slow down ambulances and fire engines.
  • May cause more traffic noise as people slow down and speed up around them.

Cobbles

Positives:

  • Will slow the traffic down consistently.

Negatives:

  • Bad for cyclists.
  • Will slow down ambulances and fire engines.
  • Noisy.

Tight chicanes

Positives:

  • Will successfully slow the traffic down – presuming they are tight enough.

Negatives:

  • May cause issues for cyclists – especially in inclement weather.
  • Will slow down ambulances and fire engines.
  • May cause more traffic noise as people slow down and speed up around them.
  • May cause people to skid if they go through them too fast.

“20 for a reason” signage

Positives:

  • Low cost

Negatives:

  • On approximately half of major roads 20mph limits appear to make no logical sense.
  • Comes across as nannying and patronising.
  • The vast majority of drivers do 30 in 20mph zones.
  • No discernible impact when they were put up.
  • Look tatty once damaged.

Florescent posts on chicanes

Positives:

  • Would make it extra clear where the parked cars are.

Negatives:

  • Doesn’t seem likely to have more than limited impact.

Move parking to other side of the road

Positives:

  • Should improve visibility around the bits too narrow for one car to pass.
  • Should stop people passing in stupid places.

Negatives:

  • May increase pressure on drivers to drive through quickly.

Signage highlighting the number of accidents

Positives:

  • Fairly low cost
  • Could be pretty persuasive to people who think numerically
  • Number of accidents is very high so should give people pause.

Negatives:

  • Not convinced similar signage on A41/A418/A4074 makes a significant difference to driver speeds.

Comments:

  • Do we have any data on their impact.

Flashing speed sign

Positives:

  • Fairly low cost.
  • Some drivers slow down for them if they aren’t paying attention and don’t realise their speed. Drivers not paying sufficient attention are likely to cause accidents.

Negatives:

  • Given drivers want to do 30 in 20mph zones they are unlikely to slow down.

Comments:

  • Do we have any data on their impact.

Speed camera

Positives:

  • People do actually slow down for speed cameras

Negatives:

  • When David Henwood has measured peoples speed he hasn’t seen people doing more than ~23mph.
  • Speed cameras in a 20mph zone are likely to be unpopular.

Parking restrictions.

Positives:

  • Would improve visibility for drivers.

Negatives:

  • Likely to be extremely unpopular with residents.

One way system

Positives:

  • Will increase effective road capacity and make journey times more consistent.
  • Should solve problems with drivers becoming impatient.
  • Ambulances and Fire Engines can continue through at speed.
  • Cyclists can continue through at speed.
  • Should be able to increase safety on Littlemore Roundabout as the turning traffic can be entirely separated from the straight on lanes.
  • Seems to be popular with residents.

Negatives:

  • Will need a mini-roundabout at the entrance to Newham Road.
  • May require removing parking on Newman Road.
  • Need to check if buses can turn into Newman Road from Rose Hill direction.
  • Major road layout change.
